Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden wish you
A HAPPY OLD STYLE NEW YEAR
The tradition to celebrate the Old Style New Year comes from discrepancy between the Julian calendar (so called “old style” calendar) and the Gregorian one – the calendar according to which practically the whole World lives. This discrepancy comprises 13 days.
In the evening before St. Vasiliy’s day which fell before on the 1st January in people in Russia celebrated the St. Vasiliy’s eve. Saint Vasiliy was a Lar of the hog-breeding. Therefore on this lavish with food evening it was customary to cook festive dishes, to welcome guests and to tell fortunes. It was considered that Christmas fortunetelling in the night from 13th to 14th of January always come true сбываются. That night the most popular among girls was the catoptromancy, i.e. trying to see their fiancé in the mirror.
However when the Gregorian calendar came in to force the period of Christmas in Russia of the Republics of the Soviet Union was shifted to the dates of 7th – 19th January, and as sequence the old style New Year “dropped out” of the Christmas week.
The Old Style New Year — is a unique historical phenomenon, an additional holiday which appeared due to the chronology system changing. Owing to this calendars discrepancy we in Russia celebrate the “New Year” twice – according to old and new style. So that in the night from 13th to 14th of January everyone has opportunity to permit himself and celebrate the most beloved holiday one more time. The matter is that for many pious people the Old Style New Year has a special meaning, because they are able to have a tremendous celebration only after the Advent ending.

It is a tradition on the 1st of January to whish to each other a new happiness and love for the coming year. Therefore it is quite reasonable in the Old Style New Year night to wish everyone the old happiness, which, as to me, I would like to keep. And it is not the question of words combination. It is a very beautiful holiday. The Old New Year Night is like an overture to the Christmas days pleasure and joy. I think the Old Style New Year is akin to Christmas. Christmas-tide wishes everyone love, kindness and happiness. I would like people loving someone tell about his love and change somebody’s life and shear his soul’s warm. Do you know someone who has everything and nothing to wish? Yes? Let’s wish him to be liberal and generous!
Nowadays the Old Style New Year popularity rises from year to year. More and more people consider it as a separate holiday which extends the New Year fascination or allows them to feel it for the first time…

You know Russians celebrate it in different ways, some of them quite calm, at home with their families, without bustle which is inescapable companion of the celebration. The other arrange parties and masked balls with funny performances and show-dances with Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden, his grand daughter, competitions between guests, as well singing and dancing in a ring around the New Year Tree. The main idea of these performances is usually that evil spirits kidnap the Snow Maiden or steal the New Year’s tree and guests helps her grandfather to find them and make the evil spirits kind. At the end of such parties the best mask and the best fancy dress is awarded a prize.
I do like such celebration of the Old Style New Year
and sure you would like it too!
